Najib says welfare state leads to economic ruin

    By Shannon Teoh

KLANG, Feb 6 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak today took aim at proponents of a welfare state, stating that all welfare states ended up facing “very serious economic problems”.

The prime minister told about 1,500 disabled and less fortunate people gathered at the Hokkien Association here that his administration strived towards providing a social safety net instead to ensure wealth is fairly distributed.

“We are not a welfare state. All countries that practise a welfare state end up facing very serious economic problems,” Najib (picture) said, in an apparent reference to PAS’s “Negara Berkebajikan” concept.

“But we practise a social safety net and give priority to welfare. Then we can create a fair and just society that is balanced in sharing wealth,” the Barisan Nasional (BN) chief added in his 15-minute speech.

PAS had championed a “Negara Berkebajikan” concept at its general assembly in June last year but BN leaders mocked the Islamist party for dropping its commitment to an Islamic state and also insisted the government had already introduced a welfare state.

“The government has always struggled towards achieving a welfare state. Therefore I find it strange and peculiar that they want to establish a welfare state.

“What they claim as new, we have had for a long time. There is no need for them to take the model of the current government,” Najib had said at a forum last June.

But PAS has insisted it did not propose a welfare state (negara kebajikan) but a benevolent state (negara berkebajikan) which also focuses on good governance and social justice which are part of an Islamic state.

Najib had tabled a budget for this year themed “National Transformation Policy: Welfare for the Rakyat, Well-Being of the Nation” which included RM2.5 billion in cash handouts and a pay increase for the country’s 1.3 million civil servants worth RM2 billion.

He pointed out initiatives such as the RM1.4 billion handed out to the less fortunate under the 1 Malaysia Social Welfare Programme (KAR1SMA) and RM500 for each household earning less than RM3,000 a month under the Bantuan Rakyat 1 Malaysia (BR1M) as examples of Putrajaya’s social safety net.

Much of the Euro zone, which is under threat from a Greek default, practises welfare programmes and benefits funded by government spending which some economists say are the root cause of the current debt crisis.

It's all a question of how you manage your finances. A welfare state need not lead to economic ruin. So long as there are no restrictive impediments, people would always want to make more money. It's corruption that causes economic ruin and besides that it destroys civil society further when leading institutions get corrupted. Corruption money never contribute to economic indicators since technically it doesn't exist. We are suffering from this scourge.

Can you guaranteed, and if the current government is corrupted then just make the news public by making a police report. Don't just talk like a person with zero education. Jika orang sebut perkataan parya, awak marah, jadi jangan cakap benda yang tak ada bukti. See your leader (Anwar), ada bukti pun tak mengaku.

All facts supposed to be derived from empirical data gathering or actual observation, but no data can stand on its own without reasons, so we have strong reasons to believe the current government has been overdue with its corrupted ways every time it was formed and continue to be corrupted in its administration.

mr. pm, so you think your are running the malaysia econmy into better situation? if so, why you want to use EPF money to loan the people income below rm 3000 to buy a house? Why dont you government come out the money to loan these people? EPF is our hard earn money, it is not suppose to be used as this kind of loan or as a tool to help you gain your political mileage. Dont use our money, ok, use those money that have been corrupted by your umno.

Hello are you an economist or just a member of arithmetic level, no country leaders on earth have money to develope a country, the country revenue can be from all form of resources and manage by good leaders, you should be thankful to survive in this country prosperously just only after 30 years of independent. China enjoy its prosperous economy just about a decade ago. So please don't be to arrogant with your statements.

Please ask ordinary people on the street, who lives in prosperity? Most have to survive to live below poverty line in the last week before pay day and the amount of money left to support the family is getting tight every day as long as UMNO is still in power. Ask the fork tongue, when is he going to dissolve the parliament?

Social Safety Net sounds like US's style of of capitalism in managing wealth or this is another way of protecting US trade interests in Malaysia. Just look at 1Care for allocation health to complement the Private Healthcare Services and Facilities Act 1998, the Manage-Care Organizations are going to stay to benefits from this new healthcare delivery systems. So that what Najib means by providing social safety net to Malaysians.
