KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 — The kidnappers of 12-year-old schoolboy Nayati Shamelin Moodliar used the social network site Facebook to negotiate a ransom with his family, The Star reported yesterday.
Police plan to track down the kidnappers with the help of the Bukit Aman Cyber Crimes Investigations Department and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
They hope to pinpoint the kidnappers’ location by tracing the Internet Protocol (IP) address used during the Facebook negotiations.
The Star also reported that the initial amount demanded was RM1 million before Nayati’s parents negotiated with the kidnappers to accept a lesser sum of RM300,000.
After the ransom was paid on Wednesday afternoon, the kidnappers released the boy at the Sungai Buloh highway rest stop the next morning.
He was picked up by his family after contacting them with a mobile phone left by his abductors.
The case had captured public imagination, with posters of the boy appearing across the Klang Valley in various languages.
It was reported that Nayati, who was still in his school uniform, was abducted by two men in a black car on Friday at 7.35am a short distance from Mont Kiara International School.
The men were said to have grabbed the boy while he was walking to school, bundled him into the car and sped off.
Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah will be leading the special team set up to find the kidnappers.
