NETHERLANDS MARITIME INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (NMIT) REDEFINING THE MARITIME FRONTIERS

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 July (Bernama) -- Since commencement of its operations in May

2011, the Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT) with the full

backing of world renowned Dutch maritime education institutes, namely Maritiem

Instituut Willem Barentsz (MIWB) and Maritiem Instituut de Ruyter (MIR), is

expecting 500 students to enroll at its City Campus in Johor Bahru by end of

2012.

SPM students nationwide make up the majority of the present intake. With

financial study aids provided to Malaysians by YAYASAN YAACOB, FELDA, PTPTN and

other government-linked agencies, we envisage the City Campus will reach its

full enrolment capacity this year, and with the KDN approval, another 1500

international students are expected to enrol at our EduCity campus when it is

fully operational in 2013.

NMIT currently offer courses specialising in maritime management over a 2.5-year

period with three (3) Diploma programmes i.e. Diploma in Maritime Transportation

Management, Diploma in Shipping Management and Diploma in Port Management.

The highlights are a subsidised optional study tour to the Netherlands where our

first batch of final-year students will spend 2 weeks after graduating end of

next year, with visits to our two Dutch partners i.e. Maritiem Instituut Willem

Barentsz in Terschelling & Maritiem Instituut de Ruyter in Vlissingen.

There is also a proposed visit to the Port of Rotterdam, the Hague, Maritime

Museum of Rotterdam, Amsterdam Port, Offshore Supply Base and logistics/shipping

companies amongst others. The study tour is to give the much needed exposure to

our students complementing their 4-month internship either locally or in Europe

in their final semester.

NMIT Diploma students can choose to pursue their Bachelors Degree and Masters

Degree at our two partners’ institutes in the Netherlands or later at NMIT when

we start offering our very own degree courses recognised in Europe and other

parts of the world in the near future.

NMIT programmes are designed by both academicians and industry players to

provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the maritime industry and

maritime transportation and its interface with associate industries particularly

sea ports.

NMIT believes that one of the pillars of attaining global competitiveness in the

maritime industry is developing adequate and well-trained human capital. Our

presence in EduCity@Iskandar by early 2013 is a sign of our commitment to be a

major player in the maritime education sector and also in response to the

government’s realisation of the importance of the maritime industry in Malaysia.

2013 onwards will see NMIT offering more Diploma-level courses covering maritime

law, marine HSSE, offshore maritime operations, maritime entrepreneurship,

amongst others.

NMIT’s courses fully take into account of new legislation and the changing

pattern of maritime industry and besides being approved by the Ministry of

Higher Education, are accredited by their Dutch partners. This provides a

conduit to pursue higher education in Europe and their employability is further

strengthened not only in Malaysia but also in EU countries.

Graduates of NMIT will be trained and ready to serve employers in various

sectors of the maritime industry and pursue careers in maritime transportation,

ports, shipping, maritime logistics, vessel traffic management, education,

leisure, offshore oil & gas, and maritime law in both private and government

sectors.

There are 3 student intakes i.e. in January, May & September every year.

Malaysians and International applicants with a passion for a career in the

maritime industry are urged to apply online at www.nmit.edu.my for the next

intake.
