After the charge was read, Anwar responded: "It''s a political charge. I
claim trial."
Judge Mahmud Abdullah allowed them bail of RM500 each with one surety.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Wahab Mohamad offered the three
accused persons bail of RM2,000 with one surety to ensure that they would attend
the court hearing.
"As we now see what is shown on television and what is happening, the bail
is thus necessary so that they will be present in court," he said.
Anwar''s lead counsel, Karpal Singh had asked the court to impose a personal
bond to his client as he argued that it was a simple case.
Another counsel for Anwar, Datuk Mohamed Yusof Zainal Abiden argued that
based on Anwar''s record in the 1998 and 1999 case, he had never failed to attend
court hearing for his case.
