KOTA BAHARU, July 14 (Bernama) -- Kelantan Menteri Besar Kelantan, Datuk Nik
Abdul Aziz Nik Mat today said that he was aware of illegal mining activities in
hulu Kelantan.
However, he said, there were carried out on small scale and using the
traditional method.
"It is only recently that it is being carried out on a huge scale involving
the use of machinery," he told reporters after closing a seminar on enhancing
the political integrity of the Kelantan PAS women leadership here today.
He was commenting on a newspaper report about illegal mining activities
being carried out in several districts in the state, including Kuala Krai, Jeli,
Tanah Merah and Gua Musang.
The report also mentioned a raid by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission
(MACC) on an illegal gold mining operation in Hutan Perasu near Gua Musang.
Asked whether he was satisfied with the action taken by his officers in
addressing the problem, Nik Aziz said no.
