NO PLANS TO SET UP IPCMC - NAZRI AZIZ

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- The government has no plans to set up an

Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC), said Minister

in the Prime Minister''s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz in parliament

today.

To a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PKR-Permatang

Pauh), he said the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission set up on April 1,

last year was sufficient to investigate complaints of misconduct of

enforcement personnel in the country.

On March 25, 2008, then prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced

that the IPCMC draft bill was ready to be presented to the cabinet before being

tabled in parliament. But it was deferred as parliament was dissolved that year

to make way for the 12th general election.

Anwar had asked whether the government would set up the IPCMC to enhance

police integrity, especially in the face of allegations of misconduct by police

personnel during the Bersih 3.0 rally.

Replying to Anwar''s original question on alleged police brutality on media

personnel and the public during the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28, Mohamed Nazri

said from video-recorded images and following investigations, two policemen were

charged in the Magistrate''s Court on May 28 under Section 352 of the Penal

Code for using criminal force on a Guanming Daily photographer at the Bersih 3.0

rally.

Replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Mohamed Aziz (BN-Sri Gading)

who asked on the government''s action against those involved in the Bersih 3.0

fracas, Nazri said: "The Attorney-General''s Chambers has assured that it would

take action against them".

"We are colour blind, whoever flouts the law ...if we have solid evidence,

we will bring the Permatang Pauh MP (Anwar) and Gombak MP Azmin Ali) to court,"

he said.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said as at

last month, Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) had completed 17,790

people-friendly houses (RMR) nationwide.

"SPNB has built 474 RMR units in Sarawak and is in the process of building

another 110 units," he said in reply to Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (BN-Bintulu).
