With summer coming, festivals dominate the agenda, like Montreal's renowned Jazz Festival and its comedy fest, Summerfest's pop music and LA's Film Festival, plus trade shows and museum shows, such as Stieglitz and Jean Paul Gautier.

The LA Film Fest, produced by Film Independent, screens over 200 feature films, shorts and music videos from more than 30 countries, primarily showcasing indie films as well as the high-profile, similar to the Gotham Awards in New York City. Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro serves as the 2011 Guest Director and premieres his horror film Don't Be Afraid of the Dark starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce. The program also includes ‘conversations' with actor James Franco (127 Hours) and director Julie Taymor, who launched the Spider-Man musical on Broadway.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier

For the 35th anniversary of fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, the first retrospective devoted to the couturier spans selections from his 1976 ready-to-wear collection to 120 dresses from his haute couture firm in 1997. The exhibition celebrates the refined avant-garde style and ties with music (Madonna, Lady Gaga), cinema (Luc Besson, Pedro Almodóvar), dance, theater, and television with clips of films, concerts, ballets, and fashion shows. Photography features images of Andy Warhol, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, and Robert Doisneau. The show travels to the Dallas Museum of Art in November.

Alfred Stieglitz and His Circle: American Moderns from Atlanta Collections

This exhibition features approximately 60 works -- watercolors, prints, paintings and photographs -- drawn from the High's permanent collection, as well as loans from private collections located in Atlanta. On display will be works by both Alfred Stieglitz and the artists who engaged with him over the course of five decades -- from the early experimental works of Max Weber to the mature expressions of John Marin and Marsden Hartley, and the progressive photographic compositions of Paul Strand and Edward Steichen.

The 24th Annual BIO convention, the global biotechnology industry event of the year, takes place June 27-30 in Washington, DC. The world's largest music festival attracts up to 1,000,000 visitors and is spread over 11 stages. The 11-day event covers alternative to zydeco from noon until midnight. This year featured artists include: Kanye West, Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj, Peter Gabriel, Def Leppard, The Black Keys, Katy Perry, Florence and the Machine, as well as sports, jugglers, a marketplace and interactive exhibits set against Lake Michigan.

32nd Montreal International Jazz Festival

Also known simply as ‘Jazz Fest,' the largest jazz festival in the world attracts more than two million attendees. Artists include pianist-singer Diana Krall, newcomer Esperanza Spalding, veterans Tony Bennett and Dave Brubeck, and saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Also South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour, DeeDee Bridgewater, Jean-Luc Ponty, Steel Pulse and Bootsy Collins. Robert Plant kicks it off. Other pop acts include k.d. lang, Sade, Eliza Doolittle, Wanda Jackson and Marianne Faithfull.

Just for Laughs Festival

Almost a month-long event, Montreal's comedy festival, Just for Laughs, features stand-up comedians, sketch and improv events and free street shows, throughout July. Craig Ferguson and his International House of Comedy, as well as Eddie Izzard, Louis CK, Colin Quinn, and Maria Bamford are set to perform. Skit shows include Best of the Fest, The Ethnic Show, The Nasty Show and new faces at various venues throughout the city. Other comedy events include Just for Laughs in Chicago, the Edinburgh Fringe in August and Comedy Central's New York Comedy in November.

41st Comic-Con International

The Comic-Con conference of comic books, science fiction and fantasy is one of the world's largest, attracting 130,000 attendees. Sessions feature well-known artists and writers from Marvel, DC Comics and graphic novelists as well as stars of film and television with directors previewing superhero and fantasy movies and shows. A preview night takes place July 20. Other highlights of this otherworldly event are the exclusive collectibles on the exhibit floor and the masquerade. New York hosts a fall Comic-Con and WonderCon happens in San Francisco in April. Passes sold-out last December.
