KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 (Bernama) -- The National Union of Teaching Profession
(NUTP) is confident the government would address the woes and concerns of
the 400,000 ordinary classroom teachers and provide them with more promotional
Its secretary-general, Lok Yim Pheng, said the teachers who were “core”
ground-level educators, should remain calm and continue with their routine work
and leave it to the union to take care of their welfare.
She was allaying the “frustrations and concern” of these teachers, in lieu of
the announcement by the government on Teacher''s Day that gave cheers to more
than 2,000 principals and senior assistants who would enjoy a pay hike,
beginning early next year.
"The irony was that instead of causing cheer, the announcement had caused
much concern and unhappiness in the teaching fraternity because the bulk of
them have been left out,” she told Bernama here today.
She said the union which represented 140,000 teachers nationwide would seek
an immediate meeting with the prime minister to present to him the grievances
and woes of the ordinary classroom teacher.
