Iain Percy Biography

Successful British sailor Iain Percy will be competing at his fourth Olympic Games at London 2012. Sailing in the Finn class at Sydney, Percy unexpectedly won gold for Team GB. He switched to the Star class shortly after the games in 2000, sailing alongside Steve Mitchell. The pair went into the Athens Olympics as medal contenders after picking up World Championship gold in 2002 and bronze in 2003, but finished disappointingly adrift in sixth. Percy followed up the Athens disappointment with World Championship bronze medals in 2004, 2005 and 2007 as well as a European Championship gold in 2005. Sailing with Andrew Simpson at the Beijing Olympics he claimed his second Olympic Gold in the Star class – earning an OBE in the Queen’s honours list. Percy’s form in the event has continued over the last four years, with titles at both the 2009 European Championships and 2010 Worlds. A silver at the Hyeres World Championships earlier in 2012 suggests that the veteran will have a strong chance of adding another medal to his Olympic collection, although the Brazilian boat will be one to watch.
