PAS baffled by RM1 million aid to Chinese school with 15 students

Increase in Chinese support for BN in Sungai Limau, says Najib - Bernama

Ahead of the Sungai Limau by-election on November 4, PAS has questioned the government's decision to allocate RM1 million to a Chinese school in the constituency which only has 15 students.

SRJK (C) Aik Min, with only 15 pupils will be getting RM1 million. The same amount is given to SRJK (C) Yuk Meng in Sungai Limau Dalamm while and SRJK (C) Pek Hwa which will receive RM50,000.

PAS by-election operational director Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah, saying the party did not have any issue with financial aid to Chinese schools, said Barisan Nasional must also be fair to other schools.

He said the Kedah government under PAS contributed RM50,000 to all the Chinese schools and the amount was later increased to RM70,000.

“But the fund was cut when BN won the state with the new Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir wanting to focus on those who helped him in the recent general election,” said Amiruddin.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, on the campaign trail in the run-up to the Sungai Limau by-election on November 4, announced an allocation of RM2.5 million to three Chinese schools in the constituency. He also approved RM200,000 for the Sg Limau Chinese Education Fund.

Meanwhile Kedah PAS commissioner Datuk Mahfuz Omar brushed aside the "goodies" to the Chinese community in Sungai Limau.

“I believe that Chinese community will make a smart decision during the polling day,” he said.

Muhyiddin denied that the contribution was a "bribe" saying, "Since they asked for help, we help".

He also refused to comment on whether the aid was conditional on BN's victory.

Chinese voters make up 6% or 1,842 voters of the Sungai Limau electorate, which has 27,222 registered voters. 93% of the voters are Malays.

The Sungai Limau state seat, a PAS stronghold, fell vacant after the death of former Kedah Menteri Besar Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak, last month. PAS is fielding Mohd Azam Abdul Samat to defend the seat against BN’s Dr Ahmad Sohaimi Lazim. - October 31, 2013.
