GEORGE TOWN, July 25 (Bernama) -- The Asia Pacific Eco-tourism Conference
2012 (APeCO 2012), aimed at promoting eco-tourism and sustainable development,
will be held at the Eastin Hotel in Penang from Nov 28 to 30.
Malaysia Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president Datuk Mohd
Khalid Harun said the seventh edition of APeCO was being held under a
collaboration between Matta and the Penang government.
About 300 local and foreign delegates were expected to attend the conference
which would feature many industry leaders, academia and non-governmental
organisations in their field of expertise to deliver a common consensus for
sustainable ecotourism, he told a news conference.
Also present were Penang Tourism Development, Culture, Arts and Heritage
Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang and Matta Penang Chapter chairman Johari
Shafie.
Mohd Khalid said the conference, carrying the theme of "Back to Our Mother
Nature", would give an opportunity for the participants to enhance awareness on
eco-tourism as well as exchange views on conservation causes and promote
community-based projects.

Meanwhile, Law said the selection of Penang as a venue for the conference
was timely as the state had many places that could promote eco-tourism
activities.
"Penang is a good place for eco-tourism because we have national parks, the
Penang Hill, waterfalls and the botanical gardens, and we also have all the
forests that can be a good choice as tourist destinations," he said.
He said that in line with the "Greener, Cleaner Penang" campaign, the
conference would also help the state to promote its green lung that can be
explored and experienced by the participants from abroad.
