Malay rights pressure group Perkasa today rallied in front of the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur demanding three of its diplomats be withdrawn.
Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali said the group objected to the trio’s presence in the country because of their participation in the Bersih 3.0 rally in KL on April 28.
The often abrasive Pasir Mas MP said their presence at the mammoth rally - aimed at calling for clean and fair elections - have caused the impression that Singapore was interfering with Malaysian affairs.
“We strongly condemn the involvement of the three diplomats in the Bersih rally because it violates the Vienna Convention (on Diplomatic Relations) where sovereign nations must respect one another,” he said.
Handing a memorandum to a high commission, Ibrahim added that Singapore needs to apologise over the incident, because it had damaged bilateral ties, and expel the trio.
Serve as a reminder
He hopes that the demonstration today would serve as a lesson to Singapore not to interfere in Malaysia’s affairs.
About 300 Perkasa supporters gathered at the premises at Jln Tun Razak chanting, “Long Live the Malays”, “Get lost Singapore”, and “Peace to Malaysia” for about 20 minutes before an officer from the high commission staff came out to receive the memorandum.
Also present at the 1pm rally were four of Perkasa’s highest officers, including Zulkifli Noordin, Ruslan Kassim, and Syed Hassan Syed Ali.
On Friday Wisma Putra spoke to Singapore High Commissioner Ong Keng Yong over the involvement of three diplomats in Bersih 3.0, the latter who explained that the trio were there as “impartial observers”.
A pro-BN blogger had played up the issue accusing Singapore of trying to interfere in the next general election and even claiming that the three were trained by the Israeli secret service.
