Bandar Seri Iskandar, 26 May (BERNAMA) -– PETRONAS received 8,205 applications,

where out of that a total of 324 students have been awarded scholarships by

PETRONAS and Yayasan UTP this year, to pursue their foundation and undergraduate

studies at established local and foreign universities.

Of the 324 recipients, 316 were awarded the scholarships under the PETRONAS

Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP), while the remaining eight received

Yayasan UTP scholarships. Of the total, 112 students were offered overseas

programmes. The remaining 204 will pursue their studies at Universiti Teknologi

PETRONAS (UTP) in Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak.

The scholarships for the 324 students were presented today by Puan Juniwati

Rahmat Hussin, Vice President of Human Resource Management at a special ceremony

held in UTP.

In her speech, Puan Juniwati said that PETRONAS had always provided various

opportunities and facilities for the acquisition of knowledge, especially in the

areas of science and technology.

“The setting up of UTP in 1997 in itself marked an important milestone in our

commitment towards the development of education in Malaysia,” she added.

The students were selected through a stringent selection process during PETRONAS

EduQuest Camp, held at three separate locations; Bandar Seri Iskandar, Kuching

and Kota Kinabalu from 15th to 20th April 2012.

Apart from merit, PETRONAS’ stringent scholarship requirements also take into

account the candidates’ academic and extra-curricular excellence, their

performance during pre-qualification interview and written assessments as well

as the socio-economic background of their families.

The PESP is a sponsorship programme that provides educational opportunities to

deserving students to help realise their academic potential and nurture a pool

of capable personnel to meet PETRONAS’ human resource and business growth

requirements.

Since its inception in 1975, PESP has benefited about 20,307 scholarship

recipients. To date, PETRONAS has spent more than RM2.6 billion to sponsor

students to pursue their studies at higher learning institutions locally and

abroad.

Yayasan UTP was established in 2007 to support the development of UTP as an

academic institution of excellence. Recipients of Yayasan UTP scholarships are

not bonded after completion of their study.
