Philippines seen to remain No. 3 in global outsourcing

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - The Philippines is seen holding on to the third spot in the global offshoring market, with revenue for the year expected to reach $10.7 billion for a 7.4-percent share of the market.

According to Canada-based research firm XMG Global, India will continue to be the world leader, with an estimated global take of $61.5 billion, or 42.5 percent of offshoring revenue in 2011.

China will come in second with a 31.5-percent share of the pie and $45.7 billion in offshoring revenue.

XMG Global forecasts the global offshoring market to hit $144.8 billion this year. Including onshoring, the overall outsourcing market should register $464 billion in revenue, 9.2 percent better than the $425 billion posted a year ago.

According to XMG Global's mid-year report on the global outsourcing market, industry players in the Philippines and India had started to feel the adverse effects of the weak dollar. Both countries were highly dependent on their United States-based clients for their revenues.

"The US economy, which remains to be a large market for offshoring, is still on the road to recovery with a forecasted 2011 (gross domestic product) growth rate of 2.6 percent, slowing down from last year's 2.9 percent," said XMG Global chief analyst Lauro Vives.

Chinese outsourcing service providers, meanwhile, were hardly swayed, as most of them relied more on East Asian clients such as Korea and Japan. Even the Japan crisis had little effect on China's outsourcing revenue, despite the temporary halt in the implementation of some outsourcing contracts from Japan.

"The disaster may, in fact, open more opportunities, as Japanese companies consider increasing offshoring contracts for non-core operations to reduce business risk," XMG Global said.

According to the Business Processing Association of the Philippines' Road Map 2011-2016, revenues from information technology and business process outsourcing in the country could hit at least $20 billion by 2016 and even as high as $25 billion with stronger public-private partnership.

A $20-billion industry could provide employment to as many as 900,000 individuals. A $25-billion industry, on the other hand, could give jobs to as many as 1.3 million people.

Filipino's are great workers, can compete from other countries, but not all. Dahil yung iba ang ginagawa ay puro kabalastugan.

      let's make Philippines No.1 again!

      1. education system should speak more english. fewer filipinos speak english fluently nowadays compared in the past decades.

      2. as far as i know, mandarin is the top spoken language in the world, followed by spanish and english. sana dumami pa yung mga training centers in the phils offering spanish and mandarin courses such as the one na naka advertise sa LRT when i was in manila last year.

      3. be investor friendly para mas dumami ang mga foreign guys na magstay sa pinas.

The ranking is mainly because of the revenue. Mas marami kasi Chinese and mas maraming outsourcing company in their country.

Hindi ko na-experience yan...walang crab sa amin...i'm living in the hinterlands...to each his own kami sa work.. if someone succeed? good for him/her...walang inggitan sa amin... mga nega? may isa akong kasamahan na masyadong nega at bitter...

How China comes in 2nd place if English language is their major barrier in their education curriculum? No question that India comes or always got the top 1 position, enabling their economy on continued improvement. China is a good source of fake materials instead of outsourcing and hopefully the data is certified true.

Philippines ranks number 1 when it comes to Quality. BPO is not only about call centers and the ability to speak English fluidly and fluently. BPO includes back-end payroll processing, software support and development, logistics, web content provider, and a lot more. There is another emerging market termed KPO or knowledge process outsourcing.

I agree that China and India are ahead of us because of cheap labor but we are still way up high in terms of quality and work ethics.

I hope the government will introduce Mandarin, Spanish, German, and French as choices for additional languages to study as an additional subject in Secondary and Tertiary levels. Love this or hate this but the ability to read, write and speak in Mandarin will be a sure advantage aside from being knowledgeable in English language.

I am also hoping that greater emphasis will be given to the teaching of Mathematics, Logic, and and Information Technolo----.

All of these will be our sure ticket to economic advancement.

kaso lang po kase the kind of outsourcing that we are mighty in is on call centers lang. We lag behind in software programming, engineering, science and technolo----, graphics and arts.
High end stuffs such as movie & music editing are now being outsourced to bollywood from hollywood.

Hehe

      I SEE WEAKNESS

Chinese outsourcing service providers, meanwhile, were hardly swayed, as most of them relied more on East Asian clients such as Korea and Japan

      -------------------------------------------------------

that means we can maintain our ENGLISH SPEAKING accounts
and COMPETE with china on getting more EAST ASIAN accounts

CHINESE nationals have a hard time speaking english because of the
language they speak while Pilipinos can hurdle this language barrier
we can speak asian and western languages without the trouble that
      most native chinese have

      hehehehehehehheheeheh

there is a PIRATED VERSION (clone) on the lose
am sure he will give a comment soon

if you check his account you will see that he created
      his account 10 days ago................

please understand him and give him sympathy if he meets you
      and insults you here

      HE NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION
      mine too

      nyahahahahahah

Why doesn't the Philippines create its own industries instead of taking jobs from other countries that put workers in those countries out of work?????
Why not start a car company to rival the big japanes car companies???
Filipino's like to say they are good workers and can out work others but the jobs they take from other countries are just call canter jobs,or electronics assembly/small manufacturing jobs. Why not take some initiative and create something new???Why not Stop imitating other countries and taking(some would say stealing) jobs from corporations that are just looking for a lower paid worker("so hire a filipino")to take a 'foreigners' job to save some money?
Tell the RP government to stop being so proud of putting other people out if work so you can have low-paying jobs and create a products that will garner respect and be something to be proud of rather tahn saying:"I am a call center agent",WOW!!!

I don't find this report amusing! This means walang pag-asenso sa sariling bayan. Why do we need to go abroad para mabuhay at mag excel sa ating mga propesyon?!!! Our youngsters should aspire to work for their own country not to dream of leaving Philippines after college!!!
