Photo apps go retro with ‘disposable’ smartphone cameras and mailable photo postcards

Over the last few years consumers have been going crazy for smartphone apps that feature retro camera filters but now app developers are taking the old-school trend a step further with "disposable" cameras, photo printing and postcards.

The newest on-trend app on the block revives the concept of a disposable camera. The free app is called Dotti and comes courtesy of popular camera app maker Sincerely.

Dotti is available on Android or iOS and lets budding photographers snap away until they have collected a roll of 12 shots. Users can develop their (virtual) roll of film and have the photos sent to them in the mail for just $4.99 (or $5.99 outside the US).

Another app, developed by Synthetic, the makers of retro camera filter app Hipstamatic, also brings the disposable camera into the digital world and puts a fun spin on sharing your camera with friends. The free iOS app, called Hipstamatic Disposable, was launched on December 15.

Sincerely has also created an app called Postagram that enables you to print and send your digital images as a real postcard. The free app is available on Android and iOS and enables you to create postcards for $0.99.

The idea of the app is to make photo taking more social, while also making people think more about the photos they are capturing. "From the first click to the last, everyone shoots to one camera roll, and at the end photos are magically exchanged to all of the camera's contributors," explains Synthetic.

Additional well-loved blast-from-the-past camera apps include Instagram, Hipstamatic, 8mm Vintage Camera, and PocketBooth.
