Pink Ribbon spreads good cause in Bali

An annual charity dubbed the Bali Pink Ribbon Walk (BPRW) took place at the Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Saturday.

Held by the Bali Pink Ribbon Foundation, an organization of volunteers passionate about educating women about breast cancer and supporting those with the disease, the five-kilometer route was set along the beautiful manicured gardens of Nusa Dua and that area’s pristine beach.

More than 950 participants from Indonesia as well as outside the country happily joined the walk for a good cause. The registration was Rp 150,000 (US$12.32) for adults and Rp 75,000 for children up to 14-year-old, which included a BPRW t-shirt. Local school students could join the walk for free.

Besides the walk, the event also offered free basic breast cancer screening supported by volunteer doctors from Bali and Singapore to help spread awareness concerning the importance of early cancer detection.

Fun activities graced the event as well, such as live music and DJs.

Visitors could also stroll around the 35 stalls available at the event, offering everything from fashion, jewelry and skin products to food and beverages with prices starting from Rp 25,000.

An area for children was popular among the visitors due to its fun activities such as apple bobbing, popcorn, fairy floss, face painting, paint your own pink ribbon T-shirt and a bouncy castle.

According to Pink Ribbon Foundation founder Gaye Warren, this year’s event aimed to raise funds to purchase a mobile breast screening bus to help reach more villages in remote areas in Bali.

“We need to raise funds to purchase the mobile USG [ultrasound] unit and the minibus to transport patients from their homes to the medical center. We also have plans to hire radiologists and raise more funds to train them to operate the USG machine,” said Warren.
