PETALING JAYA, May 22 (Bernama) -- The police have detained an Indonesian

maid in connection with the theft of jewellery worth RM50,000, belonging to

Federal Territory Wanita Umno chief Datuk Azizah Abdul Samad.

The 29-year-old suspect was picked up at a house in Kampung Melayu Subang

here, about six hours after residents recognised her face from media reports and

called the police.

From the suspect, the police recovered part of the jewellery which was taken

from Azizah''s house in Kelana Jaya.

Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed confirmed the arrest.

Yesterday, Azizah lodged a police report that an Indonesian maid, whom she

had hired about three weeks ago, had allegedly taken the jewellery and

disappeared.

The jewellery comprised a diamond necklace, earrings and bangles.

Azizah and her daughter discovered the theft at 3pm, upon returning from a

meeting in Negeri Sembilan.

Arjunaidi said the police were trying to determine the existence of a ring

of thieves which might have been in cohorts with the maid.
