TANJUNG MALIM, May 7 (Bernama) -- Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri
Mohamed Khaled Nordin today reiterated that the police have basis to detain any
students who violate the country laws.
He said the police would not act if they did not have concrete evidence.
"Students in public or private institutions of higher learning are required
to abide by rules and regulations whether they are in or outside campus.
"The are bound by the laws and if they are arrested or detained, the police
have basis to do so," he told reporters after special convocation ceremony at
Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) here today.
He said this in response to the arrest of a Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM)
student, Khaled Mohd Ismath, 22, by the police two days ago in connection with
the April 28 gathering in the federal capital.
Khaled was later released on police bail.
On action to be taken by the university, Mohamed Khaled said, it was up to
the university concerned.
