BUKIT MERTAJAM, May 9 (Bernama) -- The police detained two drug addicts

after shooting and puncturing one of the tyres of a car in which they attempted

to escape from a routine inspection here yesterday.

The suspects were picked up after a two-kilometre chase when the car came to

a halt about 6pm, in front of the Politeknik Seberang Prai.

Central Seberang Perai police chief ACP Azman Abd Lah said today, a police

patrol car had earlier, tried to stop the car which sped away, forcing the

police to chase them.

He said the duo, aged between 20 and 30, tested positive for drugs.

"We believe they tried to avoid arrest because they had committed a crime.

Preliminary investigations also revealed that one of them has a criminal

record," he added.

Azman said the duo, who were locals, did not have any identification

document when they were nabbed, adding that the car was rented.
