PUTRAJAYA, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- Political stability is the key factor to lure
foreign investments into the country, International Trade and Industry Deputy
Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said today.
He said potential foreign investors would likely shy away from investing
in Malaysia if street demonstrations continued, leading to perception the
country faced an unstable political climate.
During a recent trade and investment mission in Japan, he said a potential
Japanese investor brought up a question, following a street demonstration in
Kuala Lumpur, as to most Japanese, Malaysia is a politically stable country.
He said the potential investor asked whether Malaysia could guarantee their
(Japanese) investments would be secure, in light of street demonstrations which
were more commonly associated with other countries.
"So, you can imagine how difficult it was for me to answer the question. But
the point is that political stability is the number one factor in the minds of
investors when they are considering various countries to invest," he told
reporters when asked to comment on the Peaceful Assembly Bill 2011 tabled
yesterday.
