GEORGE TOWN, May 28 (Bernama) -- The Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) has
submitted a proposal to the Finance Ministry, to build a Customs, Immigration
and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Penang.
PPSB chairman Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said PPSB believed the area had a
potential for embankment of more than 1,200 hectares from the port.
"There will be a shopping complex, hotels, commercial complex and halal hub
when the CIQ is build, and can directly generate economic development.
"The current duty free zones have different concept from the previous one,"
he told reporters after a Barisan Nasional (BN) Political Affairs committee
meeting chaired by Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan here today.
Hilmi said Malaysia should not depend on manufacturing-based industry but
should be balanced with service industry in order to achieve developed nation
status.

He said with the CIQ, more than 100,000 job opportunities would be offered
within five years.
Meanwhile, in another development, he noted that there was no decision made
by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak regarding the privatization of the
PPSB.
"Prime Minister has not decided on the matter yet, maybe he has other plans
on that," he said when responding to rumours that PPSB was sold to billionaire
businessman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary.
