ROMANIA ASSURES S'PORE WILL SPEED UP TRIAL ON ACCIDENT CASE INVOLVING FORMER CHARGE D'AFFAIRS

SINGAPORE, April 27 (Bernama) -- Singapore''s Minister for Foreign Affairs

and Minister for Law K Shamugam said the Romanian Foreign Ministry took very

seriously the hit-and-run accident case involving former Romanian Chargé

d''Affaires in Singapore Dr Silviu Ionesccu.

According to Singapore''s Foreign Ministry, Shanmugam said he was given the

assurance by Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania

Bogdan Lucian Aurescu that the latter''s ministry would do everything necessary

to ensure that the case proceeded as quickly as possible.

Shanmugam said this after meeting Aurescu on the sidelines of the 19th

ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan today.

He noted that it had been over two years since the hit-and-run accident

involving Ionescu and that the Singapore Government continued to monitor the

Ionescu trial currently underway in Bucharest closely.
