KOTA KINABALU, July 6 (Bernama) -- The SM Sabah College dance team the
country proud by bagging three gold medals and an award during the recent
international Dance World Cup 2011 in Paris.
The 10-member team, comprising eight male and two female students who called
themselves ''Tagaps Dance Theatre'' won a gold medal for the Junior National and
Folklore Dance category, while two of its members Adhlie Sa’adillah and Marius
Manoel won two gold medals for best contemporary segment and best overall title
in the Open Duet/Trio category.
The team''s choreographer Mohd Hairul Nazmi Talib was named the Best
Choreographer, based on his most innovative work.
Sabah College dance team which represented the country, won the titles
against 27 competing teams from schools and dance academies from England,
France, Germany, Russia, Japan, Nigeria, Canada and Australia, among others.
The Dance World Cup 2011 (DWC) is a prestigious competition that annually
attracts dancers from around the globe to participate in a variety of
categories, such as ballet, modern and contemporary, jazz and traditional
dance, and this year it was held at the Disneyland Amusement Park in Paris from
June 28 to July 3.

Met upon their arrival at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport today,
principal Nuinda Alias who headed the contingent said she was proud of their
achievements in only their first international event.
"This is an unexpected success...we have proven that Sabah College Boleh,
Sabah Boleh, Malaysia Boleh!
"Although we have enjoyed success at national and state level previously,
we wanted to penetrate the international scene, and this is also the first time
Malaysia was involved in this championship.
"So, ultimately I am happy that the talent of the students - ranging from
13 to 17 years - could be explored, exposed and compete on par with other
international dancers," she told reporters.
She said the team had prepared and trained six months for this particular
championship, and said most of the funding for the trip came from private
sponsorship and the state government had also made a contribution.

Meanwhile, Adhlie and Marius both said they were still in a daze after their
success and also surprised over winning the open duet/trio category.
"Previously, Tagaps Dance Theatre had participated in the Sabah
International Folklore Festival in 2009 and 2010, where we also emerged as
champion in our first try by performing an indigenous ethnic dance.
"In Paris, we performed a Bajau ethnic dance for the folklore dance
category, and I guess we managed to impress them with our culture," said Adhlie.
