How to Save on a Domestic Vacation

Thinking your next vacation has to break the bank? Think again. There are plenty of affordable destinations right here in the United States, whether you're interested in the beach, the mountains or a bustling city. Here are a few to check out the next time you plan a trip:

Camping

Camping is an affordable way to see some of the most beautiful places the country has to offer. Yellowstone National Park is one of them, with reasonably priced lodging and campgrounds. Despite it being one of the more popular national parks to visit, Yellowstone won't feel crowded due to the 2.2 million acres of territory. Head further west to Yosemite, where you'll find beautiful northern California scenery and hiking at a low cost -- again, camping is the cheapest form of accommodation, and there's even free bus service.

For an eastern option, visit the Adirondacks in northern New York. Camping is the most frugal option, but if you'd rather stay in a cabin or hotel then make sure to avoid the fall "leaf-peeping" season when rates are highest. Enjoy hiking, canoeing and kayaking among the many lakes and mountains.

Swimming

One unexpected vacation destination is Gulf Shores, Alabama. Because many travelers aren't aware of this stretch of coastline with its palm trees and sandy beaches, you can find few crowds and reasonable rates. Another spot with beautiful beaches is Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, as long as you know when to go. Fall and winter are perfect times to avoid the crowds of spring break and the high rates during the summer.

Don't count out Florida from your beach vacation checklist if you think it might be too expensive. While some cities in the state have steep airfare and hotel rates, Tampa is one spot that you can visit for less. Plenty of beaches and nightlife make it a perfect getaway.

Exploring

Whenever you're traveling to a new city, look into buying an all-access pass. Many tourism organizations have this option available for those that want to see the city's most popular attractions at one discounted price.

If you're looking for bustling city life and culture, a few of our southern states have a lot to offer. Nashville is the perfect destination for the music-lover, with budget-friendly options to listen to live music and taste the region's traditional Southern cuisine. Savannah is known for its galleries and rich history, and has a lot to offer those that visit any time of year; to save money however, plan to travel to either city in the winter.

In the Midwest, Chicago is known for its museums, shopping and dining. Much of the city's most impressive artwork is free to view in outdoor displays, especially at the famous Millennium Park.

Adventuring

Salt Lake City is a skier's paradise in the winter, with plenty of annual events and festivals throughout the rest of the year to keep visitors busy. Avoid winter holidays and spring breaks for the best ski-and-stay rates and fewer crowds. Try late summer to take advantage of biking, swimming, hiking and rafting.

Jackson Hole is a lesser known destination when it comes to outdoor adventure, but due to a recent boost in tourism it now combines the appeal of rugged mountain country with arts and culture. Enjoy Grand Teton National Park, where you might see one of the many elk residing in the area.

Acadia National Park in Maine has a little bit of everything for the adventurous type: you can see mountains, beaches and hiking trails in a classic New England setting. Visit in September and you'll avoid the summer crowds while getting a look at the changing leaves. Enjoy all of the free attractions this park has to offer.

Wherever you decide to travel, a few minutes of research before booking can save you a lot of money. If you can visit your destination slightly into its off-season, you'll benefit from lower costs, smaller crowds and perhaps even a better taste for the local flavor. Wherever your travels take you, be sure to comparison shop for the best rates and deals before you leave.
