SUBANG JAYA: A 35-year-old convicted felon masterminded a RM60,000 sugar heist after his employer failed to conduct a background check of his prior convictions.
Subang Jaya district police chief, ACP Yahaya Ramli (pic) told The Malay Mail that initial police investigation found the factory management did not do a background check on the suspect who was hired as a security guard.
"Checks later showed the suspect was not engaged from a licensed security firm but was merely hired about a year ago as a security guard because he was available and cheaper," said Yahaya.
He said normally a registered security firm would screen applications for security positions by liaising with police.
Yahaya said investigations also revealed the suspects pre-planned the heist for several weeks.
"They stole sugar in small quantities over two to three days from the factory so as not to arouse suspicion," said Yahaya.
He said the sugar packs when smuggled out had potential buyers.
On Monday, police arrested seven suspects including five security guards of a sugar factory in Batu Tiga after some 23 tonnes (23,000kg) of sugar went missing.
Police recovered three tonnes of sugar packs from a private warehouse in Teluk Panglima Garang, Kuala Langat.
Yahaya said police planned to extend the remand order on the suspects which ends today.
