SENIOR CITIZEN KILLED, WIFE SLASHED BY DEPRESSED GIRL

MUAR, May 29 (Bernama) -- An elderly man was killed and his wife seriously

injured after they were hacked with parangs by a depressed girl, aged 22, at a

house in Kampung Parit Kerinchi, Bukit Gambir, Ledang, today.

The victim, Mohd Reduan Haron, 73, had serious injuries on his head and

back, while his wife Juriah Dimiyati, 61, had three slash wounds on her head.

Both were rushed to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital, but Mohd

Reduan died on the way while Juriah was admitted and reported to be in stable

condition.

The incident began at 10.04am, when the suspect, 22, who came from Kampung

Sawah Ring three days ago, turned up at their house and kicked open the door

before shouting that a man wanted to rape her.

The suspect then grabbed two parangs and started slashing left and right

while screaming.

Seeing this, Juriah who was cooking, shouted at her husband to disarm the

girl but he fell from a slash on the shoulder and was repeatedly hacked.

The suspect then attacked Juriah, slashing her on the head three times but

she crawled out of the house.

Neighbours who heard Juriah shouting for help, rushed to her aid. The

suspect''s sister then managed to calm her down and took her home.

Met at the hospital, Juriah said: "We heard the suspect screaming in her

sister''s house, which is just three houses away, prior to the incident."

Meanwhile, Ledang police chief, Supt Harun Idris when contacted said the

suspect, who was detained soon after, was believed to be suffering from

depression since four years ago and had never undergone treatment.

The suspect was locked up in a room in her sister''s house to prevent any

untoward incident, but was believed to have escaped through a window.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
