SEMPORNA, June 25 (Bernama) -- The Department of Environment (DOE) has
received bouquets for organising the ''Friends of the Environment'' programme for
students in Semporna to help protect the tourist destination.
Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said
the students in the programme could serve as the eyes and ears of the DOE, in
relation to the environment in schools and their respective areas.
"As a tourism district based on the beauty of the islands renowned as world-
class diving attractions, the aspect of cleanliness and conservation of the
environment must always be given priority so that its reputation is not
affected," he said.
He was speaking at the opening of the ''Friends of the Environment'' programme
organised by the DOE Tawau branch here today.
During the ceremony, four schools in Semporna received RM5,000 each to
implement numerous activities related to the conservation of the environment.
