SIBU, May 2(Bernama) -- The bumiputra community, here, wants the government
to allocate the post of deputy chairman in the Sibu Municipal Council(MPS), to a
bumiputra leader, to ensure their welfare is looked after.
This was raised by several participants of a programme ''An evening with the
veterans of Sibu'' at a hotel, here, yesterday, attended by Nangka State
Assemblyman, Associate Professor Dr Annuar Haji Rapae’e.
The posts of chairman and deputy chairman, which are political appointments,
were inherited by leaders from the Sarawak United People''s Party(SUPP), since
MPS was set up about three decades ago.
The demand had been made since a long time back but failed to receive due
attention.
According to Mohd Ali Serani, 63, one of the highest posts in MPS, which is
a policy making agency, must be given to a bumiputra leader.

He said this was crucial so that whatever policies which were made involving
the residents of the town would be implemented more transparently and also took
into account the interests of the bumiputra community.
Another resident, Annuar Bai, 70, said, based on the current political
situation in Sibu, it was time the post was given to a bumiputra leader.
Meanwhile, Dr Annuar suggested that the post of deputy chairman 2 be created
if there were objections in giving the deputy chairman''s post to a bumiputra.
