SIBU, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The popular Sibu "pasar malam" (night market) at
the open car park between Market Road and High Street is to be relocated by May,
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said today.
He said the new site would be the Butterfly Garden at Chew Geok Lin Road,
fronting the Igan River.
Tiong said the relocation of the 176 stalls is necessary due to the traffic
congestion around the present site.
"Because it is open-ended and has too many entry points, motorists and
motorcyclists continue to sneak in despite it being closed to all. Secondly, it
can revert to its function as a car park for night shoppers," he said.
On another matter, he said all the 25 SMC councillors will attend a
brainstorming session next month to formulate strategies to better engage the
