KUALA LUMPUR: Local property developer Sime Darby Property Bhd is the first organisation in Malaysia to receive anISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System standards certification from SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd for the energy management of its property assets.

The certification is the gold standard for energy management systems in the operation and maintenance of property assets. It provides a systematic guidance to achieve continual improvement of energy performance encompassing energy efficiency, energy security and energy consumption.

This, said the developer in a press release, is in line with its efforts to implement the energy management system in its property assets, starting with Wisma Sime Darby, located at Jalan Raja Laut here.

Datuk Abd Wahab Maskan, managing director of Sime Darby Property and group COO of Sime Darby Bhd, said the certification is an affirmation of the company’s commitment towards embracing sustainability in every way.

He said that improving energy efficiency has been identified as one of the property developer’s 14 sustainable goals. The company aims to achieve a 20% increase in energy efficiency by 2020.

“Towards this end, we have adopted an Energy Efficiency Programme that is aligned with the ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System Model. This programme is aimed at certifying properties managed by our property investment arm to meet the required  standard.”

As part of the certification process, it has invested in various energy-efficient technologies in Wisma Sime Darby. Theseinclude the installation of various speed drives for the cooling tower fans and condenser water pumps to optimise energy usage, leading to 13% savings in energy in the building.

“This success has encouraged us to be steadfast in our effort to continue the certification process for our other properties,” said Abd Wahab.

At the certificate presentation ceremony recently, Khalidah Mustafa, managing director of SIRIM QAS International, said they were impressed that in less than a year, Sime Darby Property had successfully established and implemented an energy management system in Wisma Sime Darby that is in compliance with the stringent ISO 50001:2011 standard.

“It is all the more remarkable given the fact that Wisma Sime Darby is more than 20 years old,” she said. “This achievement is testimony to its strong commitment to efficient energy management and sets a good example for others to follow.”

The developer has a significant presence in the Asia-Pacific region with projects in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Vietnam and China.
