    At the function today, Shahrol presented 1MDB Academic Grants, totalling

    RM750,000, to assist poor Indian students to pursue higher education at local

    universities.

    Fifty students who excelled in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and

    Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) received RM15,000 each.

    The 1MDB Academic Grant, in partnership with SMC, is the brainchild of Prime

    Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also chairman of 1MDB''s Board of

    Advisors.

    Yayasan 1MDB, the corporate responsibility arm of 1MDB, provides funding for

    the grant while SMC is responsible for the rigourous selection of eligible

    candidates.
