KUCHING, June 13 (Bernama) -- The beauty of the Sarawak river and several
traditional villages along its banks, which are not found in many cities in the
world, can become major tourist attractions to the state.
Sarawak Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the success
of Sungai Melaka in attracting 12 million tourists, had inspired the Sarawak
government to improve the infrastructures at and cleanliness level of the
Sarawak River.
"We are trying to maintain the cleanliness of the Sarawak River as well as
the other rivers such as Sungai Bedil, Sungai Bintangor and Sungai Bintawa, to
become the main tourism products in Kuching city," he said in his speech at the
gathering with Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) staff at the headquarters in
Bukit Siol, here today.
He said through the Darul Hana project, the state government would continue
to develop and beautify the traditional villages along the Sarawak River
especially from Kampung Boyan to Kampung Pulo as well as the nearby villages.
Abang Johari said the state government would develop several parks in the
city.
He also urged the people in the state to maintain a responsible attitude to
protect the infrastructures because the government had spent considerable funds
to develop the infratructures.
