AT&T, T-Mobile pledge to bring 5,000 jobs to US

WASHINGTON (AP) — AT&T Inc. is pledging to bring 5,000 wireless call center jobs, currently based abroad, back to the U.S. if it is allowed to proceed with its proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA.

The company is also promising that the merger would not result in any job losses for AT&T and T-Mobile USA wireless call center employees who are on the payroll in the U.S. when the deal closes.

AT&T's commitment to repatriate jobs comes as antitrust regulators at the Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department ramp up their reviews of a combination that is certain to reshape the wireless industry's landscape.

AT&T, the nation's second-largest wireless carrier, is seeking government approval to buy T-Mobile USA, the fourth-largest, from Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG. The cash-and-stock transaction would catapult AT&T past Verizon Wireless to become the nation's largest wireless provider, and leave Sprint Nextel Corp. as a distant number three.

Although AT&T said it has not yet determined where the new U.S.-based jobs would be located, it promised they would offer "highly competitive wages and benefits." The company hopes this message will carry weight in Washington, where job creation is a top priority for the Obama administration as the nation faces the possibility of a recession heading into the 2012 election.

"At a time when many Americans are struggling and our economy faces significant challenges, we're pleased that the T-Mobile merger allows us to bring 5,000 jobs back to the United States and significantly increase our investment here," AT&T Chairman and Chief Executive Randall Stephenson said in a statement.

Beyond the call center operations, AT&T has said it does anticipate some workforce duplication after the deal closes, but expects to make reductions largely through natural attrition.

Opponents of the proposed merger, including public interest groups and Sprint, insist it will lead to fewer choices and higher prices for consumers by eliminating a carrier that offers lower rates and less expensive plans than competitors. They also fear the deal could jeopardize Sprint's future as an independent company and ultimately lead to a wireless industry duopoly.

AT&T and T-Mobile argue that the acquisition would benefit consumers. They say it would lead to fewer dropped and blocked calls and faster mobile Internet connections for subscribers by allowing the companies to combine their limited wireless spectrum holdings at a time when both are running out of airwaves to handle mobile apps, online video and other bandwidth-hungry services.

They also say the transaction would position AT&T to cover more than 97 percent of the U.S. population with its new high-speed, fourth-generation wireless service.

Finding more airwaves to keep up with the explosive growth of wireless broadband services and ensuring that all Americans have access to high-speed Internet connections are both top priorities of the FCC and the Obama administration.

Reject the consolidation. The merger is a job killer. The AT&T CEO could just bring the call center jobs back to America ... just because. Would it hurt the bottom line ... yeah; but , so what.

We need to tax U.S. Corporations that take American jobs abroad to the point that is no longer feasible for them to take the jobs abroad. We should not let them have the benefits of doing business in the U.S. while benefiting from cost savings in labor by moving American jobs abroad. I'm tired of talking to foreigh support specialists who I can't understand becaues of their accents.

Kudos to the Justice Department for filing suit to prevent the T-Mobile merger! Those who defend AT&T are simply part and parcel of the defenders of consolidation of industry which has shown to be monopolistic ultimately resulting in loss of jobs, poor service and the enrichment of executives and the few. Can one really believe AT&T will provide jobs? Look at their track record. They use outside contractors and place them in AT&T trucks. They equate customer service to asking to remain on the line to answer a survey on how well the caller was treated instead of providing well-trained company employees familiar with your area and account to provide immediate answers and service in the field. The Justice Department is correct in not falling prey to their promises. Look at their track record with regard to the outsourcing. We need more competition to provide more jobs and more consumer service to Americans! It is time the Justice Department also moves a step further and enforces the anti-trust laws by breaking up the large banks and financial institutions and ratings agencies who have wreaked havoc on the world economy through mismanagement and greed. Why? Because these managements do not care or know what is going on with their businesses on a grass roots level, they only care about self-aggrandizement, bigger bonuses and personal perks, hence the outrageous compensation for the executive suites. And after the financiers there are other industries that need the same scrutiny. What are the three (3) things necessary to provide more jobs and opportunities for Americans while providing lower cost to consumers and raising living standards for the many instead of the few? Competition, competition, competition! Kudos to the Justice Department!

OK - 'rethunk' my position pn this.... How about in exchange we REQUIRE AT&T to take ALL their jobs to another country? - pack it up and leave. Surely we can do better.
    • Larry  •  8 months ago
OK - So far they've promised more and better coverage (TV ads say they are the best now), better prices for customers and now 5,000 US jobs?? Can anyone give an example of promises like these on corp deals that actually come true? Close them both, start over.

AT&T's call center employees still won't speak English.

Ok I have a question? Why did the government let AT&T move the call centers in the first place. They broke up AT&T orginally because the government said they had a monoploy. That provided the baby bells. Since then most of the baby bells have MERGED back with AT&T to become 1 company again. Why are the call centers still overseas,So if AT&T makes that part of the deal and the government mandates that the call center remain in the United States then let AT&T have T Mobile .They will go under no matter what.

att BLOWS. No customers. No service. Nothing works. Just victims. Millions upon millions of victims held in bondage with predatory contracts. Rethink failure - att

Deja vu. Wasn't Ma Bell broken up before into the Baby Bells ?? Ma Bell is trying to get fat again by eating babies like T-Mobile. Ma Bell was broken apart for a reason in the past. We don't need to go through that again. Ma Bell is fat enough already. Give someone else a chance. The competition will be good for prices.

Guess the Justice (sic) department didn't want anymore jobs here in the US. If Barry's administration had a clue they would sit around in a circle all day and stare at it because clearly they have never seen one before.

Sadly, that will never happen, but they probably do sit around in a circle and listen to Barry proclaim "Jobs is my number 1 objective." Well Barry is your objective to add or remove jobs? I ask because everything you have done since taking office has resulted in a loss of over 2 million jobs. Change you can believe in? Yeah, right.
