Taiwan donates US$380m to developing nations in 2011

Taipei (The China Post/ANN) - Taiwan contributed US$380 million in official development assistance (ODA) last year, accounting for 0.093 per cent of the country's gross national income (GNI) for 2011, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced yesterday.

The figure is a slight drop in comparison with the ODA for 2010, which stood at around 0.101 per cent of the country's GDI, according to Stanley Kao, director-general of the MOFA's Department of Economic and Trade Affairs.

The decrease in foreign aid funds is due to the global economic downturn, but is still acceptable given the local government's dwindling annual budget, Kao told reporters during a regular MOFA briefing yesterday.

But Taiwan still has much room for improvement in foreign aid since the ODA standard set by the United Nations is 0.7 per cent of a country's gross national product, the MOFA official said.
