Tourists flocking to Guatemala to celebrate a new era for humanity

The Mayan city of Tikal is getting ready to mark the start of a new era for humanity on December 21 according to Mayan cosmology.

The Guatemalan National Tourism Institutereports that 95 percent of the hotel rooms in the Mayan city of Tikal are booked for the evening of December 21, the day when the Mayan calendars end.

According to the Maya calendar, a new cycle for humanity of 5,200 years called B'aktun 13 starts on December 21.

The government of Guatemala is organizing the world summit "New dawn for humanity" in Tikal, one of the main cities in the ancient Mayan world. The event will take place on December 20 and 21 and aims to attract the "most creative minds" in the world to welcome the new era.

According to Guatemala's daily El Periodico, the government has invited British singer Elton John, as well as members of the Irish rock band U2, the Canadian singer Neil Young and the Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, among others.
