Tragedy as teenage girl dies minutes after applying hair dye

A teenage girl collapsed and died 20 minutes after colouring her hair, according to her friend.Monklands General Hospital in Lanarkshire where Tabatha died.

Tabatha McCourt, 17, was enjoying a quiet night-in watching the ‘X Factor’ live show at her best friend’s house in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, when tragedy hit.

According to friend Heather Goodhall, 20 minutes after applying the dye, she began pulling the foils out of her hair in agony and vomiting before collapsing.

Speaking about the ordeal to the Scottish Daily Record, Miss Goodhall said: “She started shouting, ‘No, no’, and my mum's boyfriend held her and tried to calm her down.

“It was really scary. Her eyes started going all funny and then she just started being sick. It was really frightening.

“She looked just like a rag doll - limp, just lying there. We phoned for the ambulance and when they arrived they told us to get out of the living room so I couldn't see what was happening. Next thing we knew she was taken out of the house and into the ambulance.”

She was taken to Monklands General Hospital where she sadly died.

Speaking with Yahoo! News today, a spokeswoman from Strathclyde Police confirmed the incident but said that no cause of death has yet been established.

However, the possibility that she suffered a rare allergic reaction to a chemical in the dye will be investigated in a post-mortem examination.

Tabatha’s grandfather John Bell, 59, said she had no health problems and the hair dye couldn't be ruled out for playing a part in her death.

He added: “We still don't know what happened to our beautiful girl.”

In 2001, an inquest heard how Narinder Devi, from Birmingham, died from an allergic reaction to home hair colourant. Pathologists said Devi suffered a severe anaphylactic shock which was ‘most likely’ caused by the hair dye.

im allergic to hair dye so please read the instructions carefully.....im now going grey gracefully.....
      • Piemanpete 7 months ago
No need to go grey - gracefully or otherwise - if you'd prefer a bit of colour! My wife, 54, deals with 'problem greys' with natural henna colouring products from Lush and I can testify to their effectiveness - lovely colour and shine!

plain speaking, i don't see how that is any of your business.
Piemanpete thats a good, idea, i never thought of lush. i might use those next time as i dyed my hair 2 weeks ago (ive dyed it for years and never had any problem) and i had a rash all round my hair line. (it was one of those live! ones by the way).

this girl was most unfortunate but the chemicals in the hair dye could be really dangerous very often . Anyway they go straight into your sistem trought your skin in the scalp. Should be more research and CLARITY. about it.

If she was so highly allergic, maybe a patch test would have yielded the same result.....just a tragedy that no one could predict :-(
      • Miles 7 months ago
a patch test is only over a tiny area, just a dab, so it would of had a smaller surface area to be adsorbed into the blood stream than it did applied all over the head. Yes it still may have killed her but she may have had a fighting chance

I was just thinking how some folk with a peanut allergy can be affected just by the fumes, they don't even need to consume the nuts themselves. Awful shame for the poor lass.

A patch test would almost certainly have saved her life. Yes, it would still have been unpleasant. PLEASE, everyone, ALWAYS do a patch test -even if it does seem boring!

I wish people would just be happy with the way they naturally look. If we're blonde we want to be brunette. If we're brunette we want to be blonde. There's a girl lives near to me and she must change her hair colour every few weeks. She's been blonde, black, brown, and now she's bright orange. Vanity. If people put the same amount of effort into helping the needy and important issues in the world as they do to altering their appearance the world would be a perfect place.

I had a reaction to a dye I used for Years, when they changed and " improved " the product . I'm now staying grey the burning to my hair and scalp was to painful.
I wonder if the young girl had done a patch test .

As a salon owner i enforce skin tests on colour and we take a lot of flak from people because the salons down the road will always do it on the same day with no test. I really hope this makes some people realise that i dont turn them away till the next day because i dont want to do their hair, i turn them away because i would not want to ruin their hair let alone the thought that i could have a death on my concience.

What papers are reporting I think are wrong , most say it was the hydrogen peroxide , I say no it's the PPD's which is a toxic dye , misinformation can be so dangerous. My advice to anyone who uses products that contain PPD's is , DONT USE IT. Make sure your dye is as natural as it can be .

However many times you use home hair colour, DO A SKIN TEST. Even if you've used the same one over and over. It says so on the packet - in big letters.
That poor girl. And the women who witnessed it, my heart goes out to you.

R.I.P to this young girl :( Hair dyes do carry warnings, the one I use says do the skin test 48 hours before applying. In case you think I'm lying, it's Clairol Nice'neasy. All hair dyes carry warnings to do the skin test before applying to the scalp, don't always assume the manufacturers are at fault, it could simply be a very rare and very tragic reaction.

i did experience the allergy just today,,i cant breath well and felt nervous, the smell is so strong and its my first tme to use that product,,I promise to my self that I wont to use it again..
    • sharon  •  7 months ago
we know it says to do a test. we don't know whether she did or not.even if she didn't that doesn't make it her fault or that she 'deserved' to die as some seem to be implying
    • Debbie  •  7 months ago
@ brax. you can expect the product to be banned! the stuff is in most hair dye and they say on the instructions to do skin test first, just as we do in the salon. some people have severe anaphylactic to hair dye, others to peanuts and so on. should there be a ban on peanuts too? my thoughts are with the girls family, such a sad thing to happen.
    • Philippa  •  7 months ago
All hair dyes cary warnings but a strand test would not indicate a severe allergy as it's cut off first. The only way is to mix a small amount and test just a drop behind the ear and leave it for 24 hrs. If it causes the skin to go even a slight pink DON'T use it.

But how often are the recommended procedures (skin and strand tests) carried out? I would say it's only by 10% of people do them. Even hairdressers in salons don't do kin tests ....

This is a rare (thankfully) tragedy and my heart goes out to her family and friends, and especially her friend's family who were with her at the time.

she should've read the instructions first, it was indicated at the label to test it on a small part of skin to know if you're allergic or not.
