United Airlines App to Better In-Flight Entertainment Quotient

In a bid to enhance its in-flight entertainment offerings, United Airlines – the wholly owned subsidiary of United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL) – has introduced a new application called United app.

The app allows passengers to access a wide range of movies and television shows while on board through Wi-Fi-enabled mobile devices and laptops. The United app can be easily downloaded from Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Google Play store or Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iOS platform on any Android or iOS device.

In-flight servers of nearly 200 aircraft of United Airlines store extensive movie and TV content. The new service is also available in United Airlines’ Airbus A319, Airbus A320 and Boeing 747 and its Boeing 777 aircraft that primarily fly between the continental United States and Hawaii.

By the end of 2015, United Airlines aims to extend this service to all its fleets inclusive of two-cabin regional jets and domestic and international planes that do not currently offer customers an on-demand entertainment option.

Increased long distance travelling has compelled most carriers to offer such entertainment options to passengers. Moreover, availability of faster in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity has encouraged these carriers to improve onboard service standards.

Meanwhile, United Airlines has started operating six flights every week from Los Angeles to Melbourne. The carrier will use The Boeing Co.’s (BA) 787-9 Dreamliner jets on the route which will also be the longest Dreamliner course, covering 8,550 miles.

We believe that launch of these new routes coupled with such value-added services will provide United Airlines the impetus to improve traffic and capacity, thus catering to the increase in demand within these routes.

United Continental currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
