KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and

oilfield services provider, Schlumberger, today signed a memorandum of

understanding (MoU) to enable the university to develop a professional workforce

for the oil and gas industry.

Vice Chancellor of UTP Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Kassim said the collaborative

agreement would also create an enhanced recognition of UTP as an advanced and

forward looking learning institution.

The agreement was the result of a long-term collaborative agreement between

Schlumberger and Petronas from Oct 5, last year which focused on technical

projects, technology solution applications, education and learning initiatives.

"Our success and uniqueness is our close collaboration with many industry

giants including Schlumberger, Shell, Mitsubishi, Baker Hughes, Kencana

Petroleum, Hitachi and Sapura Crest," he said after the signing ceremony at

Technology Park Malaysia here.

Dr Zainal signed for UTP while Schlumberger was represented by its Vice

President for Oilfield Services, Brunei, Malaysia & the Philippines Dr Demos

Pafitis.

Meanwhile, Dr Demos Pafitis said the sustainable and long-term development

of future experts was important for the oil and gas industry which would help

the nation grow through equipping the university and its graduates with the

latest knowledge and skills as effectively and efficiently.

"We see this collaboration with UTP as one of the various ways that

Schlumberger will continue to invest in Malaysia and its people," he said.
