    UTM TARGETS 500 FOREIGN LECTURERS BY 2020

    KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) hopes

    to have 500 foreign lecturers by 2020, said its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr

    Zaini Ujang.

    He said till Dec 29 last year, UTM had 154 foreign lecturers teaching in

    various fields of science and technology, compared with none in 1990.

    "This year UTM is targeting to have 200 foreign lecturers for postgraduate

    programmes from Europe and Japan, by 2013," he said when contacted by Bernama.

    Zaini said more young talented lecturers from Europe had moved to China,

    Australia and Singapore due to the current economic crisis in that region and

    UTM would also seize the opportunity.

    "We chose Japan because UTM has a Malaysia-Japan International Institute

    Technology," he said.

    According to Zaini, the existence of foreign lecturers holding Doctor of

    Philosophy (PhD) would not only create expertise in various fields of studies

    but also help in social culture.

    Meanwhile, Zaini said based on data from the Higher Education Ministry till

    Nov 30, 4,435 foreign students had pursued their studies in UTM and helped the

    university to emerge as a leading public university.

    Zaini also said among the measures taken by the university to attract

    foreign students were through promotion in UTM''s website, improve in academic

    quality as well as give opportunities to students to write article in journals

    as thesis requirements.
