KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- Wanita Umno will set up a special
secretariat to provide skills training for women and single mothers from
low-income families to help them earn extra money, next month.
Its chief, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the pilot project would
start in the Klang Valley, targeting women with a household income of below
RM1,000 a month.
He said the women would be trained in skills such as tailoring and cooking
to enable them to set up a home-based business that could be expanded into an
online business.
The programme, which caters not only for Malays but also other races, would
enable the participants to earn at least RM700 a month, she said after attending
the Mother''s Day celebration in conjunction with Umno''s 66th anniversary at the
Bukit Jalil National Stadium here today.
Shahrizat said Wanita Umno at the grassroots level would identify eligible
participants.

On the Mother''s Day, Shahrizat said she was happy that about 65,000 Wanita
Umno members attended the event.
She also handed out cakes to about 2,500 mothers at the event.
Shahrizat expressed her condolences to the family of a Wanita Umno member
who was killed in an accident involving two buses and a trailer in Port Dickson
last night.
The buses were ferrying Umno members back to Johor after attending Umno''s
66th anniversary celebration at the stadium last night.
Seventy-seven others were injured in the mishap.
