Wearable trackers to make it a fit Christmas

The fast-growing wearables industry offers more new products everyday. If someone you know wants to get fit in 2015, we've sorted through piles of information about a multitude of products to find the best ones depending on activity preference and budget.

For the surfer

The Rip Curl Search GPS Watch lets the surfer count the waves he catches, records his top speed as he rips it up and offers high and low tide data in 1,360 locations. Its accompanying app lets the surfer follow the Rip Curl pro team as they compete on tour and connect with other surfers and track their sessions. €349.99.

For the swimmer

Garmin Swim records distance, pace, stroke count and stroke type so that a swimmer can stop counting and start enjoying pool sessions. It uploads data wirelessly to Garmin Connect for online analysis, storage and sharing. It also gauges swimming efficiency and is water resistant to 50 meters. $149.

For the golfer

The TomTom Golfer comes pre-loaded with information on 34,000 golf courses. Its Greenview function allows you to observe the green and hazard graphics before your shot and the Lay-up feature measures distances to lay-up points along the fairway. $249.99. It's open for pre-order with delivery expected at Christmas.

For the paddler

New Zealand-based Vaaka offers several cadence sensors depending upon whether the paddle is for a canoe or kayak. Ideal for someone who doesn't like wearables as it's the paddle that wears it rather than the paddler. It quantifies boat speed, stroke rate and distance per stroke and gives real time cadence feedback to structure training sessions and improve performance. $190-$225.
