10-speed is go!

Volkswagen to develop new 10-speed DSG transmissions

Despite the DSG-niggles they are facing worldwide, Volkswagen is actually working on a new, dual-clutch gearbox for its future models. According to sources, the new 10-speed DSG gearbox is set to be unveiled by early 2014 and it promises better reliability along with efficiency.

The key purpose of this new gearbox is to meet the EU's latest legislation on fuel economy. Although it's not sure whether the gearbox is set to be unveiled along with their new, 134bhp electric-turbocharged diesel engine, the new gearbox might also be featured on newer models that is set to launch for the year 2014.

Besides that, Volkswagen is focusing more developments on natural gas drivetrains that will significantly cu-down Co2 emissions. But prior to the XL1 introduction back in Shanghai, the firm is also keen on promoting plug-in hybrids as a cleaner option.
