PETALING JAYA (June 19): PKR de factor leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today denied there was a meeting between him and Datuk Seri Najib Razak, saying that he didn't have to meet prime minister in foreign lands should the latter want to discuss issues of national concern.

He said this in response to reports that he and Najib could have met in Jakarta last weekend.

The point of the meeting was said to be, among other things, discussing reports of political manoeuvring to challenge Najib's position for the Umno presidency.

"Why should I meet him in Jakarta, London or New York, we can meet here (in Malaysia) in Parliament... with (Pakatan leaders) Lim Kit Siang (DAP adviser) and Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang (PAS president)," Anwar said today.

According to Anwar, he was invited to dinner with former Indonesian vice- president Jusuf Kalla but he could not make it and had instead met Jusuf after the dinner.

Late last month, it was revealed that Jusuf brokered a secret deal between Anwar and Najib prior to the May 5 general election for a peaceful transition of power, no matter who won the election.

The agreement reportedly also included for there not to be any slander, to run an ethical campaign and fair access to the media for both parties.

However, Anwar was said to have breached the agreement following Pakatan's refusal to accept the outcome of the general election, and PKR had since then organised a series of Black 505 rallies which had drawn drawn thousands of supporters in various locations nationwide.

The gathering's three main demands are for the Election Commission (EC) members to step down and a bipartisan interim panel be elected, for re-elections to be held in 30 parliamentary seats where Pakatan lost marginally and claimed it has strong proof of misconduct and for the postponement of any delineation or amendments to the election law until a new EC is selected.

Anwar said today that during his meeting with Jusuf over the last weekend, he once again reiterated that Najib did not keep his end of the bargain of a clean and free election amongst other things.

He said that there was no basis for the reports and that he had no direct communication with Najib.

Anwar said he was in Indonesia at the invitation of President Susilo Bambang Yudoyono who wanted to speak to him about current affairs of Malaysia.

"We spoke for about one-and-a-half hour, (including) bilateral and regional issues... there is nothing peculiar for a leader to meet with an elected representative... it is only peculiar to Umno," he said.
