Apartment residents in Bukit Beruntung evacuated following landslide

Penduduk Apartment Teratai dibenarkan pulang hari ini

About 500 families in Teratai Apartment in Taman Bunga Raya, Bukit Beruntung were evacuated by authorities yesterday as two blocks were deemed to be unsafe for habitation due to soil erosion.

The district engineer declared Blocks K and L unsafe following a landslide in the area early yesterday morning. The families have since been relocated to three nearby schools.

Last night, Fire and Rescue Department personnel along with Welfare Department officers assisted residents in the evacuation process and in the relocation to the schools.

Selangor police chief Datuk Abu Samah Mat confirmed the evacuation, saying it was a precautionary measure due to recent heavy rainfalls in the state.

The evacuation process had actually begun in the morning when 2,000 residents were instructed to move out temporarily due to soil movement in the vicinity of their homes.

A landslide had occurred next to Block F of the five-storey Teratai Apartment and authorities monitored the situation. A heavy downpour yesterday evening is understood to have worsened the soil erosion.

The district engineer then gave the evacuation order. Police are monitoring the situation to ensure thieves do not take advantage of the situation with the vacant units in the two apartment blocks left behind by the evacuees. – October 20, 2014.
