Bandung video mapping artwork graced art festival in Japan

“It was last year’s performance that paved the way for our performance this year,” said Adi Panutun, founder and director of Sembilan Matahari, as he began his story about his company’s involvement in the festival to The Jakarta Post Travel via online chat.

Zushi Media Art Festival (ZMAF) is now entering its fourth year. This festival aims to showcase the new form of art, different from the regular painting, sculpture and installation that one might often encounter in art galleries or museums.

Rather, it emphasizes the use of video, computers, digital, interactive, and information as its focus in creating art, presented in a place where daily life takes place, away from the confines of museums or galleries.

Last year, Bandung-based Sembilan Matahari, which prides itself on bringing a bright multimedia based new breed of entertainment labeled as designed-film, grabbed the Zushi Media Art Festival‘s Grand Prize for the 1 Minute Projection Mapping International Competition.

Projection mapping, or video mapping, is a method of projecting visuals onto a surface, often a building’s façade, to create a dynamic display.

“As last year Grand Prize winner, we were asked to present something this year,” said Adi.

According to a Sembilan Matahari release, last year they created a peacock character to represent West Java.

The peacock undertook a long journey from West Java all the way to Japan to meet another peculiar-looking and friendly character, representing the people in Zushi who had invited them.

The video mapping project, named “Warm Hug from West Java”, apparently stole many hearts, including that of the judges.

Building on last year’s story, Sembilan Matahari is now looking to share their personal story and experience to give deeper meaning through their video mapping.

The peacock is now joined by the cute character in an adventure of exploring the ocean, the jungle, caves, and space. Along the way, the two characters collected items that, in the end, they use as ingredients to make huge cake.

“The giant cake is special gift for Zushi Media Art Festival 2013 from Sembilan Matahari,” the release stated,

This year, the video mapping project is looking to present a cross culture relationship between Japanese and Indonesian people. Indonesian traditional instruments gending and angklung are to be combined with modern music to accompany the performance.

Adi had been asked to join the judging panel of the Small Video Mapping Competition and also to become one of the five judges for the 1 Minute Projection Mapping International Competition as well, along with the mayor of Zushi.

Sembilan Matahari video mapping presentation was held at the Zushi Elementary School’s on the 6th October 2013, garnering plenty of applause from the audience.

ZMAF 2013 is held in several places throughout this small city such as Zushi City Culture Plaza, Zuhsi Elementary School, Civic Exchange Center, and Festival Park from 27th September till 6th October 2013.

The festival’s programs include the 1 Minute Projection Mapping International Competition, Graffiti Mapping of Light, Small Mapping Competition, Android Play or Theater Performance, and Machinaka Media Art displayed in several points of the city.

International participants include those from Italy and Brazil.
