KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Mei (Bernama) -- Rakyat Malaysia jika diutarakan isu

berkenaan kes pembunuhan atau jenayah berat jelas amat prihatin, namun bersikap

endah tak endah dengan isu kebersihan alam sekitar yang sebenarnya juga

merupakan isu "hidup dan mati".

Ketua Pusat Penyelidikan Alam Sekitar, Universiti Teknoloji Mara (UiTM)

Prof Ku Halim Ku Hamid berkata kebersihan alam sekitar merupakan isu kritikal

yang sewajarnya mendapat perhatian masyarakat kerana kesannya bukan sahaja pada

seorang individu tetapi membabitkan keseluruhan masyarakat dalam jangka panjang.

"Hidup dan mati, orang (masyarakat) ambil perhatian, sehinggakan mereka

tidak nampak bahawa sampah dan kebersihan alam sekitar juga sebenarnya bahaya

kerana memberi impak yang besar," katanya ketika dihubungi Bernama.

Beliau memberi contoh pencemaran persekitaran sehingga mengundang pembiakan

nyamuk Aedes yang menjadi punca demam denggi, yang membawa ancaman besar kerana

turut meragut nyawa.

Menyifatkan sikap rakyat Malaysia yang tidak mempunyai kesedaran

tentang kebersihan sebagai sesuatu yang "menakutkan", beliau berkata isu

berkenaan perlu diberi perhatian drastik bagi memastikan generasi akan datang

tidak mewarisi alam sekitar yang kotor dan penuh dengan sampah sarap.

KEBERSIHAN-KESEDARAN 2 KUALA LUMPUR

"Apa yang saya lihat, tahap kesedaran masyarakat kita, bukan sahaja di

peringkat kampung, tetapi juga bandar terhadap kebersihan masih di takuk lama,

peningkatannya tidak begitu ketara.

"Mereka tidak ada sifat kekitaan terhadap alam sekitar, sifat menyayangi

alam sekitar sebagai satu benda yang bernilai sebagaimana mereka menyayangi

barangan atau harta mereka," katanya.

Untuk mencapai status negara maju pada tahun 2020, Malaysia bukan hanya

perlu mencapai kemajuan yang pesat semata-mata namun ianya turut mengambil

kira faktor kebersihan dan alam sekitar.

Bekas Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Perbadanan Pengurusan Sisa Pepejal dan

Pembersihan Awam (PPSPPA) Datuk Zaini Md Nor berkata masyarakat kini dilihat

masih tidak dapat memahami usaha kerajaan yang membelanjakan hampir RM1 bilion

setahun untuk menguruskan sampah sarap di seluruh negara.

"Mereka (masyarakat) tidak nampak bahawa setiap satu sampah yang dibuang itu

mempunyai kos, mereka buang sampah, ada orang (pekerja) angkat sampah, apa yang

mereka tahu ada pekerja yang akan bekerja menyapu dan mengutip sampah yang

dibuang.

KEBERSIHAN-KESEDARAN 3 (AKHIR) KUALA LUMPUR

"Hakikatnya jika masyarakat sendiri yang membuang sampah dengan baik,

melakukan kitar semula, kerajaan boleh menjimatkan kos pengurusan dan tenaga

kerja yang seterusnya boleh menggunakan duit yang ada untuk manfaat lain pada

negara," katanya sambil menambah kira-kira 20,000 tan sampah dihasilkan di

negara ini setiap hari.

Zaini berkata masyarakat di negara ini perlu dididik sejak kecil lagi

mengenai budaya menjaga kebersihan dan alam sekitar kerana ia bukan sesuatu

yang boleh dipandang remeh.

"Bagi saya mendidik sejak kecil adalah perkara utama perlu

dilakukan...bagaimana ia boleh menjadi satu budaya," katanya.

Justeru katanya masyarakat pelbagai peringkat perlu berganding bahu

untuk sama-sama mendidik dan mendepani isu persekitaran agar ianya tidak

berterusan dipandang lewa sehingga membawa kepada kemusnahan alam sekitar yang

tidak ternilai harganya.
