KOTA KINABALU, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- Padiberas Nasional Bhd (BERNAS) will

continue to carry out its social responsibility of sharing its progress with the

people of the country by providing various forms of assistance to the needy

groups, especially the poor, orphans, single mothers as well as victims of

natural disasters.

According to a statement issued today by Beras Corporation Sdn Bhd (BCSB),

BERNAS'' wholly owned subsidiary that carries out its operations in Sabah, a

total of RM1.2 million had been given out to the people in the state as of

August this year via various forms of social and welfare contributions as well

as business zakat payment to the state government.

In this month of Ramadhan alone, BERNAS had approved the contribution of

rice worth RM356,388 for distribution to the needy in the state.

Together with other foodstuff contributed, its contribution has amounted to

a total of RM449,468 this month.

BERNAS also gave out in financial assistance RM50,000 to five orphanages in

the state, the statement said.

Apart from the target groups, contributions are also made through welfare

bodies via community leaders including Parliament members, state assemblyman,

government agencies, schools, and both private and public welfare associations.

To ensure that the distributions are going on smoothly, any queries on

applications for contributions could be checked with BERNAS officers, it said.

Last year, BERNAS also paid business zakat amounting to RM723,995 to the

Sabah government.

The corporate social responsibility programme carried out by the company

currently, where it has pledged to donate 25 grammes of rice for every purchase

of its 10 kg rice packets, is intended to engage Malaysians from all races and

religion to help in the noble deed to help orphanages throughout the country,
