We will block Facebook if people demand it, says minister – Bernama
Following cases of abuse on social media websites, Putrajaya is now looking at the possibility of blocking Facebook in Malaysia, said Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
The ministry was gathering public feedback on the matter.
"If the people are of the opinion that Facebook should be banned, we are prepared to look into the matter but it is a radical approach," he told reporters yesterday.
Ahmad Shabery said he was aware that it would be impossible to close the social website as there were 15 million Malaysian accounts compared with 2,000 reports of abuse.
"Many businesses are also using Facebook, others to forge family ties and have nothing to do with politics... and the complaints received were around 2,000 only. Should we shut it down because of 2,000 reports? We need to relook this.”
Commenting on the action of an individual who insulted Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah on Facebook site, Ahmad Shabery said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was working with police to track down the individual. – Bernama, August 9, 2014.
