Singapore football legend Fandi Ahmad immortalised in wax
Fandi Ahmad is now well and truly an idol.
The biggest name in Singapore football unveiled a wax figure of himself on Wednesday as the latest addition to Madame Tussauds’ upcoming local museum.
Fandi’s replica is togged out in the 1994 edition of his famous Singapore No.17 jersey, which he wore when he captained the Lions to victory in the Malaysia Cup. That same year, the fleet-footed forward went on to win Player of the Season accolades and a Public Service Medal to boot.
“Looking at my wax figure is very exciting for me as it makes me relive that unforgettable moment in my career,” said the 52-year-old. “I want the younger generation to know that with passion and hard work, we can achieve our dreams.”
Fandi, who this year coached Singapore’s LionsXII side to an eighth-place finish in the Malaysian Super League, is the first local sportsperson to receive this honour.
He will stand alongside the likes of David Beckham and Muhammad Ali at Madame Tussauds Singapore, when the museum opens on 25 October at Sentosa’s Imbiah Lookout.
Other Singaporean statues on display include comedian Gurmit Singh, singer Stefanie Sun and director Jack Neo.
Madame Tussauds Singapore’s general manager Lily Lim said: “We believe that (Fandi’s) fans will be thrilled to see him at our attraction amongst the world’s greatest sports stars.”
