Facebook to take action against hate speech

Facebook is effectively a place where anyone can say just about anything with little consequence. However, following a petition and a boycott campaign, the social media giant has promised to review its guidelines and user operations code to prevent controversial, harmful and hateful speech.

This isn't a move out of social responsibility, there has been a growing movement against Facebook's double standards when it comes to moderating content. Pages that contained nudity are taken down fairly quickly, while those that are designed to promote sexism and racism are often left untouched. The movement to correct this imbalance gained momentum when several UK companies temporarily withdrew ads. Naturally, this prompted Facebook to look into the matter.

The Facebook Safety Team issued a response where they promised to improve things, among which is a five point plan that includes making content creators more responsible for their actions. Something that really should have been there in the first place.
